MSc-PhD in Biotechnology
The hallmark of RCB’s academic program is research-based learning. The Ph.D. (Integrated) Program (MSc-PhD in Biotechnology) is available to graduate students in any science, engineering or medicine discipline. The program offers comprehensive learning opportunities in the wide field of life sciences and biotechnology through intensive classroom teaching and practical lab experiments in its first year (1st and 2nd semester).
In the second year, the student is mostly expected to work under the guidance of a research guide in a field of shared scientific interest in a research laboratory and to present a Master’s thesis at the end of the fourth semester. On the basis of the student’s performance evaluation, he may be advised to leave the program with a Master’s degree (provided that all educational and other criteria have been met) or permitted to continue with the Ph.D. research program in the same laboratory.
The student can also exercise his preference at this phase of exiting the program with a Master’s degree on satisfactory completion of the prerequisites for the course and dissertation.
The Ph.D. (Integrated) Degree Program is governed by the RCB ordinances and regulations. The course curriculum places great focus on laboratory training, and the student is expected to work for a Master’s thesis accompanied by a PhD thesis after completion of the course work.
Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students
Students with an aggregate mark of 60 percent (or an equivalent grade point average) at bachelor’s degree in any branch of science, engineering or medicine are eligible for admission. Students from the categories SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and PWD will receive a 5 percent aggregate mark relaxation.
Students are also eligible to apply in the final year of their qualifying degree program provided they produce proof of having secured the required marks in their undergraduate degree program at the time of admission to the Ph.D. (Integrated) degree programme.
Eligible students are required to appear for the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS). Shortlisted students based on their performance in the JGEEBILS, shall be invited for an interview for their final selection to the Ph.D. (Integrated) Degree Program. The interview is to assess the student for his/ her science aptitude and interest in a career in scientific research and development.
Up to 20 students can be admitted, who meet the desired entry requirements. Seats will be reserved as per the Govt’s orders.
Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Students
Students with an aggregate mark of 60 percent (or an equivalent grade point average) at bachelor’s degree in any branch of science, engineering or medicine are eligible for admission. Students are also eligible to apply in the final year of their qualifying degree program provided they produce proof of having secured the required marks in their undergraduate degree program at the time of admission to the Ph.D. (Integrated) degree programme.
For admission and fellowship to the program, eligible students are expected to apply online. Shortlisted students shall be invited to appear for a Skype-based interview for their selection to the Ph.D. (Integrated) Degree Program. The interview is to determine the student’s ability and interest in a scientific research and development career.
Up to 5 students, who meet the desired criteria for selection, may be admitted. The admission of foreign students is subjected to getting a student visa from the Govt. of India for the duration of the program.
Fellowship for RCB PhD:
For the first two years of the course, the Indian and Foreign students admitted to the program will receive the RCB Ramachandran-DBT Fellowship Rs. 16000 per month, after which the Indian students will be required to qualify for the Junior / Senior Research Fellowships provided by CSIR, ICMR, DBT or other funding agencies.
Foreign students ‘ performance shall be assessed by the Student Advisory Committee after completing their MSc portion of the program and, on the basis of their positive recommendation, the student shall be awarded the RCB-DBT International Doctoral Fellowship equal to the fellowships provided to Indian students from various funding agencies in accordance with the applicable DST guidelines.
The Junior Research Fellowship is currently Rs. 31000 per month and the Senior Research Fellowship is Rs. 35000 per month.
Duration of the program:
The Ph.D. (Integrated) Degree course duration is a minimum of five years and a maximum of seven years.
Shared boarding and lodging facilities on campus are available upon payment of prescribed fees for admitted students.
The following fees are payable at the beginning of each semester.
Caution money (Rs. 5000; refundable) is payable at the time of admission. Ph.D. thesis examination fee (Rs. 10,000) is payable at the time of Ph.D. thesis submission. Hostel electricity charges are as per the installed meter, and the cooperative mess charges are to be paid as per actual.
During the course, fees may be updated in accordance with the provisions in the RCB Ordinance.
Eligible candidates applicants must apply online for admission to the Ph.D. (Integrated) Degree Program of the Regional Centre for Biotechnology. The application fee of Rs. 500 may be paid online. The SC, ST, PWD, Women candidates and foreign students are exempted from payment of the application fee.
The last date of registration for the RCB PhD (Integrated) Degree Program at RCB is 29 February 2020 for the Indian Students and 30 March 2020 for the Foreign Students.
