Doctoral candidate (Ph.D. student) in Cancer Metabolism and Microbiome Research
The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) at the University of Luxembourg offers state-of-the-art facilities and an excellent training environment for early-stage researchers, in particular in the biomedical sciences.
The Enzymology & Metabolism and Environmental Cheminformatics Research Groups at the LCSB are looking to hire a PhD student as part of the MICROH DTU, an interdisciplinary doctoral training unit which aims to study interactions within and between microbiomes in relation to two major healthcare challenges, i.e. the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases.

- Initial 14 months fixed-term contract, renewable depending on thesis progress evaluation.

The project entitled ‘Untargeted Approaches to Identify Metabolites Involved in Colon Cancer Development and Progression’ involves the development of untargeted metabolomics analysis pipelines to identify metabolites whose levels differ significantly e.g. between control and tumour samples from colorectal cancer patients or between healthy control and patient plasma samples. Elucidation of the organismal origin of these metabolites (microbiome- or human-derived) will be assisted by metabolic modelling.

- Master degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or a related discipline
- Strong background in metabolic biochemistry and analytical chemistry, as well as solid notions in bio- /cheminformatics and biostatistics
- Previous hands-on experience with chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques
- Experience with metabolic modelling will be considered an advantage
- Excellent English writing and speaking skills will be essential
