CeMM International PhD Program 2018
The 2018 CeMM International PhD Program will focus on the thematic areas of Infection, Immunity, Metabolism, Cancer and Network Medicine. These areas are built on the pillars of epigenetics and genome integrity, bioinformatics and systems biology, chemical biology, high-throughput genetics, genomics and proteomics, and molecular and cell biology.
The successful candidates will be awarded a generous scholarship, which covers all research costs, university fees, work-related travel expenses, salary and health insurance for 4 years. The Ph.D. degree will be awarded by the Medical University of Vienna.
The CeMM PhD Program is a unique blend of practical training, lectures, and mentoring that builds on the guidelines of the Medical University of Vienna (Doctoral Program N094). At CeMM, the PhD studies begin with a 3-month Introductory Program to prime the students for their research work, to develop the mindset of a critical and responsible researcher, and to form a peer network.
During the studies, there will be mandatory course work in the first two years, including basic seminars and propedeutics in molecular medicine, cell biology, and ethics, dissertation seminars and regular Journal Clubs. CeMM institute-wide seminars are held weekly, where students have the opportunity to present their work on a regular basis and receive valuable feedback from Faculty. Towards the end of the first year, each PhD student will nominate members for their Ph.D. committee, comprising of two established researchers in the respective field, which will convene annually throughout the studies to provide scientific and career guidance to the student.
Application timeline for the CeMM Ph.D. Call 2018:
|04.12.2017||Call opens for applications|
|17.02. – 25.02.2018||Video interviews|
|25. – 27.04.2018||Personal interviews at CeMM|
|01.10.2018||Ph.D. Program start date|
The CeMM Ph.D. program focuses on four thematic areas: infection, immunity, metabolism and cancer, that are built on the pillars of epigenetics and genome intergrity, bioinformatics and systems biology, chemical biology, high-throughput genetics, genomics and proteomics, and molecular and cell biology.
The choice of this strategic focus rests on the synergies between immunology, infection and cancer in pathophysiological and technological terms. It furthermore reflects the strength of the current CeMM faculty, itself built around the historical and contemporary expertise in immunology and cancer of the Medical University of Vienna.
CeMM Ph.D. students get the chance to work at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary molecular medicine research and be trained by the entire CeMM and associated faculty to become one of the scientists shaping the future of molecular medicine.
The call for the Ph.D. Program 2018 is now open until 02.02.2018. Click here to apply.
To be eligible to enroll in the CeMM Ph.D. program all candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in medicine, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, mathematics or any scientific/technical, subject-relevant degree.
Candidates applying with a Bachelor’s degree must have completed a four-year course and need to demonstrate that they have acquired a significant amount of research experience. In addition they must achieve first class honors or a 2:1.
Candidates do not need to have completed their degree at the time of application, however they must obtain their final degree certificate by the end of September. The working language at CeMM is English, so excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
All candidates are required to apply via our online application system. There, candidates will be asked to fill in an application form asking for basic information, to upload a motivation letter, CV, and study certificate/s, and to give the contact details of at least two referees.
Before the application can be submitted, at least one of the referees must have completed an online reference. An application will only be considered if a second referee has completed an online reference before the final submission deadline.
All the submitted applications are reviewed by the CeMM Faculty and selected candidates are invited to participate in a video interview.
Shortlisted candidates are then invited to Vienna for the PhD interviews in April. All candidates are asked to introduce themselves through a presentation followed by three panel interviews with CeMM Faculty members. There is also the opportunity to meet other research group members and attend an informal dinner.
At the end of the second day of the PhD interviews, all candidates are asked to submit their preference regarding which research groups they would like to work with, and on the third day selected candidates are invited back for 1:1 interviews with the group leaders.
Positions are offered by CeMM Faculty in the beginning of May. The program start date is October 1st every year.
The following Research Groups are recruiting at the Ph.D. Call 2018:
The application deadline is 2nd February 2018.
